Founded in 2014 by Avi Levy, Daniel Shill, and Moshe Lichtenstein, The Chupa Band began as a boutique chupa ensemble and quickly evolved into South Africa’s leading Jewish musical production for weddings and events.
Blending soulful grooves with funky feels, we’ve created a truly unique sound that reimagines classic and modern Jewish hits. Our trademark chupas leave an indelible mark on the soul, while our electrifying hora performances ignite unparalleled energy, transforming every celebration into an unforgettable experience.

A recording artist and dynamic frontman, Moshe Lichtenstein lights up souls and electrifies dance floors as the voice of The Chupa Band. Also serving as the Chazzan of South Africa’s largest synagogue, Sydenham Shul, Moshe’s dual artistry blends soulful, neshama-stirring melodies with high-energy anthems. His original music, now streaming globally, has become a beloved fixture in the Jewish music scene.

Avi Levy drives The Chupa Band’s signature sound with his front-and-center guitar style and unmatched flair for funk. With a career spanning South Africa, Australia, and Israel, Avi powers each performance with innovative tunings, creative energy, and meticulous musical direction. His expertise in charting and arrangement ensures every set is polished, professional, and unforgettable.

Calev Freeman brings depth and authenticity to The Chupa Band’s performances. A gifted pianist, composer, and vocalist, Calev has collaborated with global Jewish music icons while also making waves locally with his soulful artistry. Known for his hit debut studio release, Kirvas Elokim, Calev’s passion for crafting meaningful, resonant music is evident in every note he plays, both on stage and in the studio.
CALEV FREEMAN – PIANIST, COMPOSER & PRODUCER



Peter Sklair is a renowned bassist and composer whose eclectic career bridges genres and disciplines. A sought-after session musician, Peter has worked with icons like Manfred Mann, Hugh Masekela, and Yonatan Razel, and has performed with the Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra on landmark productions. From international jazz festivals to recording jingles for major brands, his versatile artistry shapes the foundation of The Chupa Band’s music. As an educator, Peter shares his knowledge at Pridwin Primary School and Tshwane University of Technology, mentoring the next generation of musicians.

The rhythmic force of The Chupa Band, Gavin Flaks is a renowned drummer whose versatility has redefined Jewish wedding music. A TAMA-endorsed artist, Gavin’s career includes collaborations with global icons like Coldplay and South African legends. His dynamic beats and innovative drumming infuse energy and life into every performance, while his role as a producer and educator amplifies his influence on the music world.
GAVIN FLAKS – DRUMMER AND PRODUCER



Phumlani Mtiti’s breathtaking saxophone performances ignite every event with soulful brilliance. A SAMA Award-winning alto and tenor saxophonist, Phumlani has performed alongside South African jazz legends and in major productions before joining The Chupa Band. His creative spark and perfectionism enrich the band’s sound, elevating every moment to new heights.
PHUMLANI MTITI - SAXOPHONE



Waldo Alexander is a versatile violinist whose innovative artistry has transformed Jewish wedding music. Based in Johannesburg, Waldo collaborates across genres, from classical and experimental music to groundbreaking session work. Partnering with The Chupa Band, he pioneered the strings trio concept featuring Philharmonic players for big-band chupa productions. His intricate arrangements and diverse expertise bring unparalleled elegance and depth to every performance.
